Harris-The Dielectric Wall Accelerator
John Harris, LLNL, and a MD graduate, will present "The Dielectric Wall Accelerator - with applications in radiography and cancer treatment"
A new type of compact, high current particle accelerator known as a Dielectric Wall Accelerator (DWA) is now under development at Lawrence Livermore for applications in radiography and cancer treatment. The DWA utilizes a system of stacked Blumlein transmission lines to generate its accelerating voltage, and can be designed for use with electron, proton, or other ion beams. In order to maintain vacuum but not shield the beam from the accelerating voltage, a nonconducting beam pipe is used. The high gradient (100 MV/m) envisioned for this machine allows it to be much more compact than comparable machines built with conventional technology, but requires the use of innovative materials and structures to prevent electrical breakdown. This talk will describe the DWA concept, its applications, and some of our recent results.
